Stonequest — the Retro RPG Experience

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the things that trip players up most. For a walkthrough of the whole game, see the tutorial.

Getting started

Do I need an account?

Yes. Sign in with email or Google. Your characters are stored in the cloud, so you can keep playing from any computer. An account also lets you see traces of other players, like the store's stock and marks in the maze.

Which browsers work?

Recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Internet Explorer doesn't work. On phones and tablets, use Chrome 125 or later on Android, or iOS 17 or later.

Controls and settings

The game ignores my keys. What's wrong?

Click the game screen. The game only hears the keyboard when it has focus, and switching tabs or apps can take focus away. Click it again to get it back. The tutorial's Input section has more.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Yes. On a phone or tablet the game opens in its touch version, made for a small screen: tap the choices, steer with the arrows or a swipe, and open the pause menu with ☰ or your phone's Back. A game left in the maze is kept, so you can pick it up later on any device. Settings in the pause menu change the colours, the text size and more.

If you'd rather play the terminal on your phone, or your device is wrongly given the touch version, open the game with ?ui=desktop at the end of the address. This device remembers it until you open the site with ?ui=auto. The terminal is built for a physical keyboard; on a phone, turn on On-screen keyboard under Settings › Game Settings in the side menu first.

Why didn't my game setting change?

Game Settings (under Settings in the side menu) take effect the next time you start the game. You can turn these on or off there: sound effects, the simulated VAX login (any key skips it), the scrolling title animation, and the on-screen keyboard.

Saving and characters

What's the difference between saving a party and saving the game?
  • Saving a party (in the Tavern) remembers who is in your party, so you can load them together again in one step. It doesn't record where you are, what you carry or your spells, and it doesn't back up the characters.
  • Saving the game (in the Camp, press S) records where you are, which way you're facing, your party, active spells and your map. Then it exits to the main menu. To resume, choose Restore saved game on the main menu. You'll be back in the Camp.
  • Good to know: you can have one saved game at a time, and the Camp doesn't offer S while one exists. Restoring uses the save up. Characters in a saved game can't join another party until you restore it.
The game says a character is "already out adventuring". What now?
  • Why: a character is marked "out" while in the maze. If you close the tab or the browser crashes, they stay marked. Another tab or device with them in the maze causes the same message.
  • Fix: if you saved the game, restore it, because they're in it. Otherwise, close the game on any other tab or device. Then choose Player Utilities on the main menu, then Recover Characters. Each recovered character ages five years.
One of my characters died. Can I get them back?

Take them to the Church of Devoted Healers in the Streets of Kyrn. Resurrection costs gold, and it can be steep. If you can't afford it yet, leave them in the roster until you can. The tutorial's last section shows the Church.

How does multiclassing work?

Each character can change class once. They don't level two classes at once. In the Training Grounds, choose the character, then C)hange this character's class. The option disappears once they've changed.

  • They can pick any class they qualify for by ability scores, race and alignment, except their current one.
  • Prestige classes can only be a second class.
  • The new class starts at level 1 with no experience. The old class and level are kept but stop growing.
  • Both classes count: spellcasting, hiding, lock picking and fighting use both, and the levels are often added together.
  • They can't change class while out in the maze or in a saved game. The wiki's class page lists each class's requirements.

About Stonequest

Is there multiplayer?

Not in real time, but you share a world. The store's stock is shared, the high scores rank you against other players, and the maze carries traces of those who've been there. You can't see other players live or play with them.

Is Stonequest free? What does Patreon do?

Free, and it will stay free. Patreon support is optional and unlocks nothing: everything in the game is free for everyone. Support in the side menu says more.

What data does Stonequest collect?

The game asks for your analytics preference the first time you start it. The Privacy Policy covers what's collected and your choices.
